The LPO aims at "protecting birds and the ecosystems on which they depend and, in particular, the associated flora and fauna" and overall biodiversity. Created in 1912, the LPO has been recognized as a charity since 1986 and has been the representative of BirdLife International in France since 1993. It had more than 44 000 members in 2009, and has 3 priority areas for action :

1. Up-dating knowledge about the conservation status of bird species
2. implementation of programmes for endangered species and their habitats
3. Education and raising public awareness about environmental issues.

The LPO and conservation

The LPO currently owns 1 000 ha of wetlands, and manages eight national nature reserves as part of a mission delegated by the state. It also invests heavily in the implementation of the Natura 2000 network in France. For example, the LPO is involved in the development and implementation of 12 management plans (called Documents d’Objectifs) in the Poitou-Charentes region.

The LPO and the Corncrake

Given its experience and involvement for the Corncrake over many years, the LPO has the capacity to develop this project : Coordinator of the National Restoration Plan for the Corncrake in France : 2005-2009 / French Partner of the Life programme for the Corncrake led by the RSPB between 1994 and 1996 / Facilitator of several Natura 2000 sites where the species occurs/ Associate Expert for developing agri-environmental measures for the Corncrake in many departments and regions (Charente-Maritime, Maine et Loire, Loire-Atlantique, Champagne Ardenne...).

In this project, the LPO will use its experience in coordinating over 10 Life programmes and ensure the reliability and integrity of the project.

The LPO and the European Life programme
